Analog:
A signal in which any level is represented by a directly proportional voltage; not digital.
Applet:
An application program that can perform simple tasks without having to send a user request back to the server. Often seen on the Internet in the form of calculator programs.

Archived footage:
Captured images from the camera system that are compressed & stored on hard disk.
Backbone:
Part of a network that acts as the primary path for network traffic.
Bandwidth:
Internet connection capacity. It affects the speed at which a user can download material from the Internet..
Baud:
Unit of signalling speed equal to the number of signal elements transmitted per second.
Binary:
Numbering system characterized by the use of ones and zeros.
Bit:
Binary digit used in the binary numbering system. Can be 0 or 1.
Bit Rate:
Speed, at which bits are transmitted, usually expressed in bits per second.
Browser:
GUI-based hypertext client application, such as Internet Explorer or Netscape.
Buffer:
Storage area used for handling data in transit.
Byte:
Term used to refer to a series of binary digits that are operated on as a unit.
Cable:
Transmission medium of copper wire or optical fiber wrapped in protective copper.
CCTV:

The commonly used acronym for Closed Circuit Television.
Central (off site) storage:
The location of all captured, archived images. Archived images from center storage are able to be accessed from VProtect's web site.
Circuit:
Communications path between two or more points.
Client:
Node or software program that requests services from a server.
Compression:
The process in which images are encoded allowing them to take up less hard disk space.
Dealer:
A company or person who resells surveillance systems.
Digital video:
The process by which an analog recording is converted to digital file format such as JPEG, MPEG, or wavelet.
DSL:
The commonly used acronym for Digital Subscriber Line; or, high-speed constant connection to the internet or other networks.
Frames:
A complete 525 scan lined picture.
Firewall:
A buffer between any connected public networks and a private network. Used to ensure the security of the private network.

Graphic User Interface

Hypertext Markup Language. The coding used to create web pages.
Installer:
A company or person who installs surveillance systems.
Interface:
Connection between two systems or devices.
Internet:
Largest global internetwork, connecting thousands of networks world-wide.
IP:
Internet Protocol
IP Address:
A unique numerical assignment that gives a computer's offical location on the Internet.
Java:
Object-oriented programming language.
JPEG:
The commonly used acronym for Joint Photographic Experts Group, a process by which images are compressed to shrink file size.
Multiplexer:
A device that allows multiple captured images to be recorded and viewed simultaneously.
On-site storage:
Recorded video that is located in the VProtect's system box at the customer site unit.
PTZ:
The abbreviation for Pan, Tilt, & Zoom which are camera controls, allowing the viewer better camera angles.
Quad:
A device that allows multiple captured images to be viewed individually or simultaneously.
Rack mount:
Hardware that is shaped and produced to be attached to a space saving, shelving system known as a rack.
Streaming video:
Streaming video is a sequence of "moving images" that are sent in compressed form over the Internet and displayed by the viewer as they arrive. They differ from JPEG images in the compression size & capture rate.
TCP:
Transmission Control Protocol.
TCP/IP:
Common name for the suite of protocols developed to support the use of world-wide internetworks.
URL:
Uniform Resource Locator. Standardized addressing method for html documents.
